1870- The Frisk Jubilee Singers started concert presentations of spirituals.
1900s-
1917- Original Dixieland Jazz Band became the first group to make Jazz recording.
1920- Jazz captivated the entire nation.
- Professional Black musicians were allowed live broadcasting and recording opportunities.
1930s- Small group or large swing bands were predominant.
1940s- the start of the "be-bop" era with Charlie Parker and Little Richard.
1960-s Soul music erupted to later influence many foreign styles of music. This was closely followed by R&B.
- Congolese musicians Docteur Nico and Tabu Ley show how abroad influences like James Brown and Aretha Franklin are reflected in the music. This West African Congolese music was also very popular in the former french colonies.
1970s-
- Ebenezer Obey and King sunny Ade became famous Juju artists by playing international tours.
-Youssour N' Dior became a famous Mbalax artist.
1980s-
- The rise of Hip Hop and R&B.

- The number of cross-over artists steadily increases. Stylistic repetition is heavily used.
